by Caroline Nersessian, MSW
Exercise – some might dread it. But in truth, it offers a little “me time” for you to focus on caring for yourself. What could be better for busy parents who really need a break?
You need some self-care to be the best you can be for yourself and your family. With kids, a job, a home and all that goes with it, that can be challenging. But, it can be done, and the benefits are vast and worth it! The Mayo Clinic reports that the benefits of exercise range from a better mood, to fighting health conditions and disease, to a better social life.
If you want to start moving more, but don’t know how to start or what type of exercise is right for you, here are some popular activities and some of the benefits they offer:
JOIN A SOCCER TEAM
Soccer allows you to enjoy the fresh air while interacting with teammates and competitors in a popular sport. Along with improving fitness and coordination, soccer will give you a chance to renew your devotion to team spirit, make new friends and get healthier. Check out the United States Adult Soccer Association to find a team near you.
TAKE A DANCE CLASS
Do you like swing, ballet, salsa, or tap? For many, dance unlocks the joy in their souls and, of course, that includes parents! Dancing is a social and exhilarating way to get fit and express yourself artistically. Dance classes and social dancing give you an opportunity to connect with your friends or partner, or make new friends.
It is perfect for parents who want to get some exercise they can really enjoy. Who says dance lessons are just for kids?! To find an adult dance class, search for dance studios near you, and ask them about their adult programs. Or, check out meetup.com to find and join a group of adult dancers near you.
According to the Mayo Clinic, yoga’s benefits include stress reduction, improved fitness and management of physical and mental health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety and insomnia.
Those who commit to practicing yoga consistently see the benefits, and many can’t imagine going back to life before they started. To find the best yoga class for you, check out the Yoga Alliance.
It is recommended that you check with your doctor before starting any exercise program to ensure that you are in condition to participate safely. Once you are cleared, don’t hesitate to start moving. Your body and your mind will thank you for it!
